The 9th European Workshops in International Studies ( EWIS ) of the European International Studies Association ( EISA ) took place between 6-9 July 2022 in Thessaloniki. The event themed “ The Interconnected Worlds of the Past and the Present: Co-constituting the International ” was hosted by the University of Macedonia. Prof. Rafael Biermann was a co-director of one of the workshops titled Patron-Client Relations in World Politics. The workshop attracted a group of senior and young scholars who work on distint topics and issue areas yet all saw prospects in the potential applicability of the patron-client framework in their research.  

During the three days, we discussed the papers of the participants covering a rich variety of issue areas and case studies including among others rebel diplomacy in the Middle East, international interventions in Africa, monetary unions in the Carribeans, and secessiont conflicts in various locations. Our last session was dedicated to breainstorming regarding the patron-client framework, discussing its conceptualization, applicability and potential benefits and pitfalls in terms of research.
